My wife works for DC’s Center of Military History in a huge underground warehouse (think the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark). She spends her days sifting through old guns, ammo and uniforms. In the last couple of week’s she’s played with Robert E. Lee’s cap and Hermann Goering’s jewel-encrusted wedding sword (I know).

Today she came home looking like she’d been hit by a truck. She told me that because her building is moving, her department has to go through every single box and re-catalog every single item in the army’s collection.

Today she heard muffled crying coming from a far corner. She followed the noise and found several coworkers kneeling over a wooden box, crying openly. This is especially strange because my wife works almost exclusively with hardened Vietnam veterans. One guy, who was high-ranking Special Forces (basically a real-life Rambo), had tears streaming down his cheeks, soaking his handlebar mustache.

As she approached, my wife found the box full of baby clothes. A torn pair of frilly socks. A bloodstained onesies reading “Tuesday” to help a mother manage the week’s laundry. A charred sling patterned with princesses.

She eventually found the box’s tag. It read:

“Infant Clothing | Flight 93 | 091101”

I wanted to save a record album to the music folder I have on my external hard drive. I selected the folder, then clicked New Folder. An untitled folder popped up, and I typed in the new name Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse. When I hit return, it went back to untitled folder. So I tried to click it again. It wouldn’t let me click it. So I tried to drag it to the trash. A little progress window came up that said “Moving to trash” and showed no progress. I waited about 15 seconds, then did it again. A second “Moving to trash” window came up. I clicked Safari, so I could google how to stop this. It didn’t work. I tried to go to Force Quit, and no menus were clickable. Still it ground away, 2 windows, moving to trash. I held down the power button and shut it down.

In other words, there is no difference between this sleek white thing I have and my Windows computer. Don’t get me wrong—I like it. But really, come on. It is not the Jesus of laptops.

Yep, I’ve dealt with the same small hassles on Macs before. Deleting things. Moving things around. Occasional freezes. They do not always “JUST WORK.” Sometimes they just DO NOT WORK.

Last night I had this epic dream about returning to my high school in Bakersfield, CA for a day. I seemed to be my current age, and there were other former classmates of mine there, also somewhat aged.

I remember entering a large classroom, and seeing a familiar and friendly teacher at the head of the class. Stranger, I think I transposed her from another school in TX, but oh well.

The main oddity of the whole thing was that everyone (minus the teacher) seemed to HATE me that day! Also, they had very little reason to do so. From what I could gather, their attitude was largely based on my participation in the Smokey & The Bandit scavenger hunt from a couple of years ago— they were asking me harassing questions about Coors and whatnot. I think I had on my AC/DC tshirt, and some guy implied that it was a cheap knockoff. I let him know that I’d bought it at an actual AC/DC concert in Dallas back in 1996, but he only continued to scoff, and tried to turn that into an insult somehow.

Seems like I eventually won over a couple of my former classmates, and I know I got a few laughs out of them with some of my comebacks, but I don’t really remember the end of the scenario. I think I woke up before it was all resolved. At least I befriended a former football player named, I think, Vumm, before I woke up.
